What are your thoughts about Syriana??
If you haven’t watched it, please watch it then tell us what you think?
Absolutely loved the film. Only Munich BARELY edged it out for bets film of last year (but only barely). It’s one of the few open and honest films about the subject of oil and the Middle East. I was also stunned at the storyline involving the recruitment of the young terrorist.
Amazing stuff.
I saw the movie and i want to know what does SYRIANA means ?
The movie’s title is somewhat ambiguous. Some have suggested that it comes from Pax Syriana, as an allusion to the necessary state of peace between Syria and the U.S. as it relates to the oil business. In a December 2005 interview, Baer told NPR that the title is a metaphor for foreign intervention in the Middle East, referring to post-World War II think tank strategic studies for the creation of an artificial state (such as Iraq, created from the elements of the former Ottoman Empire) that would ensure continued western access to crude oil. The movie’s website states that “‘Syriana’ is a very real term used by Washington think-tanks to describe a hypothetical reshaping of the Middle East.”[4] Gaghan said he saw Syriana as “a great word that could stand for man’s perpetual hope of remaking any geographic region to suit his own needs.” [5]
The word Syriana derives from Syria + the Latin suffix -ana, a neuter plural form; it means, roughly, “things Syrian.” Historically, Syria refers not to the state that since 1944 has borne the name, but to a more extensive land stretching from the eastern shores of the Mediterranean Sea to the middle Euphrates River and the western edge of the desert steppe, and from the Tauric system of mountains in the north to the edge of the Sinai desert in the south. This land was part of the Fertile Crescent, and has historically been a geopolitically crucial junction for trade routes from the east, from Asia Minor and the Aegean, and from Egypt, and has long been a focus of great power conflicts. The word Syria does not appear in the Hebrew original of the Scriptures, but appears in the Septuagint as the translation of Aram. Herodotus speaks of “Syrians” as identical with Assyrians, but the term’s geographical significance was not well defined in pre-Greek and Greek times. As an ethnic term, “Syrian” came to refer in Antiquity to Semitic peoples living outside Mesopotamian and Arabian areas. Greco-Roman administrations were the first to apply the term to a definite district (Encyclopedia Britannica, 11th ed.).
Syriana could also be a mix of Syria and the ancient name for Afghanistan, (Ariana).
I am trying to find a movie in which george clooney dies in the end and is some how related to Global Studies? Does he die in the end of syriana?
Sorry I don’t have many details but an hopeing someone out there may have a idea?
Yes he dies in Syriana. Don’t you remember it? He is in the convoy with the woman and child and everything and the Americans send a missile which kills them all.
It’s one of my all-time favorites. FASCINATING movie.
Incredible, incredible flick; great writing, awesome directing, and the actors probably did their best dramatic work in this one.
Five stars!
I mean it’s been like 3/4 of a year or something like that. What’s the deal?
It’s funny because everyone thinks it is coming out so late because of the politics and what not, but no, movies come out in accordance with how many people went to see them in the theatre and how well they did…. if it was based on politics and what not wouldn’t you think Brokeback Mountain wouldn’t have come out right away?
I understood the plot of the movie but the one part I didn’t get was the relationship between the black lawyer and his father. What was the problem between them and what did it have to do with the storyline? Great movie, but I still can’t figure this out even after having seen it numerous times.
I think the relationship between that lawyer and his father is analogous to the the relationship between the developed world and the developing world.
Just as the son cannot abandon his father, the relationship between countries like the U.S. and Saudi Arabia is sometimes bitter, exploitative, and just plain evil, but ultimately we cannot escape our interconnectedness with and responsibility for our fellow man.
I can not find an answer to that!

I was just wondering if there was any nudity/sex in this film before I watch it.
I’m really picky I suppose.
it’s a really good but really heavy movie. no sex or nudity at all
Fill in the holes please
Please be more specific, and I’d happily answer. What part didn’t you get?
I just watched it……….loved it. Who else saw it and what opinion did you have? Why? What’s your background? Why did you react like you did?
I absolutely loved that movie. I knew sort of what it was about going into it but I wasn’t sure where it was going. I had to watch it twice though to go back and pick up everything. Just imagine if that’s really happening? I don’t know if I could deal with my country using me as a scapegoat. There’s another movie out of Palestine called “Paradise Now” that talks about how people become suicide bombers. I was surprised to see that they addressed the issue in “Syriana”. It kind of gives you a glimpse at what they might be thinking and how they evolve into becoming one. It’s hard for a lot of people to understand why someone would be ok with doing that or what happened in that person’s life that would make them become a suicide bomber and the movie I think hit it on the head.
I mean, that its so plausible, imagine ordinary people like us living in total oblivion, not knowing what the so called super powers are up to!
I watched the flick 3 or 4 times one weekend after renting it from Blockbuster. I firmly believe that the scenario is true to life in the sense that it could happen and may have happened in some fashion. Throughout history mankind’s ability and proclivity for intrigue and betrayal are evident. There are many good movies which delve into the treacherous nature of our fellow beings. check out “The Parallax (sp.) View”. It is an older flick with a young Warren Beatty. Should bring to mind the cover up of the John F. Kennedy assassination. On a similar note, check into the attack on Pearl Harbor. There is plausible evidence that our government was well aware of the planned attack but let it happen. Back to “Syriana”, look at the present inflated gasoline prices situation. Check out the Nick Cage flick, “Warlord” (I think it is). Profiteers involved in every war of modern times. The mass murders of Jewish folk, gypsies, mentally challenged people (including countless numbers of children with disorders such as autism), and others designated as enemies of the state or undesirables were supported by people and businesses still alive and well in Germany. The European Union will contribute to the assault on Jerusalem. Like the poster in Muldaur’s office in “The X-Files” exclaimed, “Trust no one.”
