I have seen the movie, and enjoyed it. Not read the book yet, is there enough similarity that I will still enjoy, or enough difference that makes reading the book worthwhile?
I think both are enjoyable separately. I read the book before seeing the movie, and was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked the film. Clancy does have a tendency to get bogged down in technical details, but more so in later books, not so much in Red October or Patriot Games. Read the book, then watch the movie again, and you will probably pick up on things that you did not see before.
Can i watch the movie without knowing what they are saying in russian? will miss out on alot?
Yes there are subtitles. My husband has this film on DVD and confirms that.

No, there is no direct sequel to Hunt for Red October. There are 2 sequels: Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger. There is also a prequel called The Sum of All Fears but it takes place after the end of the Cold War placing the storyline out of place with the other movies.
What are his new plans? what do the americans except ryan think ramius wants?
He never changed his plans. He always intended to defect, but he had to keep it secret from his country duh!!! He also realiuzed that the new sub technology was too dangerous to be in his bosses hands and wanted the americans to be able to understand and detect the new phantom sub. As far as what everyone else thought. They thought he was a rouge sub captian that just wanted to get close enough to launch a nuclear weapon. Ryan knowing the captians history and his new values never believed he was willing to start a war between Russia and the U.S.
They were cast as an extra….and have a 2 second sceen, with no speaking part.
I had seen this as a Trivia question, but have since forgotten the details, and which actor it was and which submarine move….plz help. This is not IMDB, beginer trivia folks. This is hard core, i believe it may not have been included in the original release…..maybe it got cut out, but was included in the DVD.

Ben Afflack ruined The Sum of All Fears. I will never forgive him for that.
I know he isnt a huge character in the movie, but is he in a few good scenes at least? (from someone watching this movie for that reason)
Barely. If I remember correctly he’s got a small part. I love Tim Curry. The Worst Witch is my favorite!
Also can anyone tell me some more suspicious acts that happened in the film and why? Because i watched the movie not to long ago and i was like confused on some parts of the movie.
Because the Political Officer had the other key to the safe, and Ramius needed both of them so that he could change the orders. He asked for the key, he even asked nicely… but the P.O. said no, can’t do that, it wouldn’t do to have one person with both keys…
Plus, the P.O. was loyal to Mother Russia, and not on Ramius’s ‘team’. So he would have been a problem eventually, anyway. But mostly, it was the key to the safe.
I’m not sure what you mean by ’suspicious acts’? What other parts are you unsure about?
It’s a great movie with some of my favorite movie lines.
I think the best is, “You’ve lost ANOTHER submarine?” But I’m also partial to “the thing about playing chicken is knowing when to flinch” and “give me a ping, Vasily. One ping only please.”

I love the part when Baldwin is imitating Connery, when he walks away…. he does it so well! I can’t remember the exact line, but he is so funny, making fun of Raimius…

I am a fan of this movie and think the song the Russian Sailors (ok Soviet for that time period) start singing after Sean Connery says his bit at the beginning is really good and stirring stuff, can anyone tell me what is the name of that song?
