U-571 Questions
The Americans had nothing to do with the true events.
Why did Hollywood make it seem it was the US that did everything?
If you look at any war film you’d think that the Brits are a load of blithering idiots and not the fighting men they actually are. Americans are portrayed as the all conquering heroes but half the time they weren’t even there. At the end of the day it’s produced by Americans for Americans and it puts bums on seats.
Is U-571 an interesting movie for 15-16 age audiences to enjoy? Like will my peers enjoy the film or will they think it is boring?
There has never been a boring submarine movie.
A better movie is Hunt For Red October or Das Boot
PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!!! I NEED TO KNOW SOOOOOOOOOOON!
Historical fiction. Based on the true story of Royal Navy destroyer HMS Bulldog capturing an enigma machine and code books from U-110.
This movie takes place on an american submarine or U-boat (duringWWII) where the americans are captured by the germans, but are eventually forced to work together to survive. I know that this movie IS NOT U-571.
its excactly wut u said it wasnt
I know U-571 is about capturing the German enigma which the British obtained first, and the US didn’t capture one until 1944. There are plenty of other movies like Patton that make little mention of what the other countries did. So, why don’t these other countries make their own movies and correct the historical inaccuracies?
It’s not for the want of trying.
The problem is the main studios who release and market the films are all American, and since British films with an entirely British or European cast dealing with British/European subjects don’t play well in the backwaters of the US, they don’t get released or receive finance.
A good example would be the film “Memphis Belle”. The original script and idea from the British director (Michael Cayton-Jones) was entirely based around an RAF Lancaster bomber squadron, but Warner Studios wanted it to feature American pilots and demanded a script change or they would pull out of the project stating that “It’s full of Brits and what does the American market care about British things?”. Consequently the entire film was reworked.
More recently, the soon-to-be-released film “The Few” starring Tom Cruise was only able to deal with the Battle of Britain if the main character was Billy Fiske, one of the seven Americans who took part in it. It was previewed to a large proportion of the battle’s veterans…who were so disgusted by it’s content and treatment of British,Canadian,Australian,New Zealand,Polish and Czech pilots, every one of them walked out, calling the film a travesty.
A few years back, I saw a movie starring Harrison Ford, supposedly based on a true story, about a Soviet submarine that got a bad radiation leak, and the crew had to be rescued by the US Navy in the end. Can’t remember the title; what movie am I thinking of? It’s not “Hunt For Red October,” “Below,” “U-571,” “Crimson Tide” or “Das Boot.”
It was “K-19: The Widowmaker (2002)” directed by Kathryn Bigelow. The story of USSR’s first nuclear ballistic submarine, which suffered a malfunction in its nuclear reactor on its maiden voyage in the North Atlantic in 1961. The submarine’s crew, led by the unyielding Captain Alexi Vostrikov (Harrison Ford), races against time to prevent a Chernobyl-like nuclear disaster which threatens not only the lives of his crew, but has the potential to ignite a world war between the super powers. The movie also stars Liam Neeson and Peter Sarsgaard.
First of all I’d like to say I’m not anti-American, as a British person living in Britain there is so much about American culture that I love. However, when viewing a news report this evening covering the story of a British serviceman killed by American friendly fire in Iraq, the consensus of Americans interviewed on the street was that British people should be grateful that the US “saved” them in WW2, let alone complain about American friendly fire in a present day war. Its like they believed the US was almost holy in their world status. Am I the only person that thinks the war began in 1939 and that Pearl Harbour was the reason the US joined WW2? Is it right that movies such as Saving Private Ryan and U-571 only focus on the US contribution to World War 2? My granddad was in active combat back then and was a brave and most of all humble fighter - surely that is geniune selfless altruism? I really don’t want to think that millions of people could have this attitude.
Of course i wasnt around then, but the history books have shown us that America pulled together and made many sacrifices because WW2 was a justified war and America along with the rest of the world was in danger.
Some try to compare the Iraq war with WW2, thats just so far off base its not even woth debating.
I know WW2 wasnt just about America vs the rest of the world. I know of the sacrifices that Britain and others made. I know that the war started in 1939, not 41. A few Americans might not know those facts, but most of us do.
The movie U-571? It could have gone either way. We Americans captured the U-505. At the end it gave credit to what the Brits did.
The reason for the distortion of the facts in the film is just like all the other WW2 movies, the Yanks won everything and no-one else was involved. The country is made of hero’s who will take on the Military hierarchy and the enemy at the same time. Not much fact in any of the movies, the British ones were more factual although some parts have been glossed over for the sake of security at the time.
Now, I know these are all older movies, but what do ya’ll think about ‘Hunt for Red October’, ‘Clear and Present Danger’, and ‘Patriot Games’? I am just curious. Please include why you like them. Oh, and I know this isn’t based of Tom Clancy, but what do ya’ll think about ‘U-571′? The reason is I just bought all these DVD’s and I wonder what everyone else thinks about these movies. Please don’t answer if you haven’t seen at least one of them. It is all right to just comment on one movie though.
I have seen “Hunt for Red October”, “Clear and Present Danger” and “Patriot Games”. You should also see the “Sum of All Fears” in each case we follow the same central character and theme. The world could come to an end or some awful catastrophe could befall us all if Jack Ryan does not somehow work out the kinks. I like the detective work, the heightened dialog and tense situations that our character finds himself in. I also like how CIA Analyst Jack Ryan expresses himself. He knows a lot more than he lets on, but just enough to let another character know that he is smart. I also enjoy the intrigue and betrayal captured in each of these films. I have not read a Tom Clancy novel but I absolutely love the movies. You can read more about these film on the Internet movie database.
